Russell graduated in 2015 with a BSc in Chemistry from University Collage Cork. He returned later in 2015 as a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Justin Holmes, Dr. Eoin Flynn and Dr. Paul Young after competing in the MIT iGEM competition.
Current Research Russell’s research involves coating materials with proteins and polysaccharides from recombinant, natural and waste sources to obtain 3D-patterned surfaces. Current materials are often petroleum derived and often lack the complexity of biological macromolecules. His work involves the controlled phase separation of these materials and applying these materials towards biomedical and patterning applications.
